Maritime heritage

Sur

5 MIN READ

The place today

Sur is the centre of Oman's dhow-building heritage and a working maritime town at the eastern edge of the Gulf of Oman, with a lagoon, boatyards and an active fishing fleet.

Cruising notes

  • A genuine maritime town with skills and yards on the waterfront.
  • The last substantial settlement before the turn south at Ras Al Hadd.

Position on the coast

  • Jebel Sifah lies approximately 73 nautical miles to the north.
  • Ras Al Hadd lies approximately 16 nautical miles to the south.
  • Distances are indicative great-circle estimates with a routing allowance, not navigational data.

In the proposed network

Proposed as a heritage-led destination combining sailing training, traditional boat-building and a new marina — with the heritage yards treated as an asset to protect rather than clear.

Classification in the concept: Sailing & resort destination · data status EXISTING.

All network classifications, footprints and roles are preliminary and conceptual. They are planning propositions for study, not approved projects or confirmed government decisions.
