The unglamorous infrastructure that makes a coast sailable

Safe harbours and transit marinas

6 MIN READ

Two different products

A destination marina exists because people want to be there: hotels, restaurants, residences, events. A transit marina exists because a boat needs to stop: shelter, fuel, water, power, a secure berth, a place to wait out weather and, if necessary, basic repair.

Conflating the two is the most common planning error on long coastlines. Building resort marinas every 200 miles does not create a route; building small, reliable safe harbours in between does.

What a transit stop needs

  • Protected water in the prevailing swell direction, not just the prevailing wind.
  • Fuel and fresh water available without a road tanker being ordered days in advance.
  • Shore power and secure berthing for an unattended boat.
  • A functioning link to the road network for crew changes and parts.
  • Clear, published depths and approach information.

In the proposed network

The conceptual framework identifies transit points including Shinas, Al Suwaiq, Bandar Khayran, Qalhat, Khaluf, Sawqirah and Hasik, alongside a small safe harbour at Ras Madrakah. These are proposals for study, not approved projects; their value is in reducing the longest passages to comfortable day legs.
